A combination of being ridden close to the pace and enjoying the heavy 8 track at Mornington led to Sir Van Dyke winning the Frankston RSL Handicap this afternoon.
Experienced jockey Luke Nolen knew from viewing videos of Sir Van Dyke's past few efforts that he had a strong finishing burst but instead of trying to unleash his run from near last, Nolen took advantage of the muddling pace to really serve it up the rest of the field approaching the home turn.
Sir Van Dyke's burst of acceleration put him into the lead coming into the straight and his fitness levels meant that nothing could make much ground in the run home.
He went on to win by 2 lengths from Savvy Dresser with Mulinello in third place.
Fill in trainer Simon Morrish was pleased with the win and felt that Sir Van Dyke will go on to win more races over today's 2000 metres or more.
